RailQuest, mobile optimizations, and map image download

The map page is now optimized for mobile, making it easier to explore your trips, routes, and station coverage on the go. We've also added RailQuest - Fog Map, a new mode inspired by exploration games where your train journeys gradually reveal the map. And when you find a view you like, you can now frame it in 9:16 and download it as an image.

Japan Timetables, Faster Maps & Video Fixes

Shared journey links now include preview images. Video animations have been improved with filtered cancelled trips, fixed intermediate stops, and an updated distance counter. Route coverage maps now load faster, and timetable integration for Japan is available in beta. Please report any issues you notice.

viaduct Fall Update

Our fall update makes viaduct faster and adds a few things we've been looking forward to sharing. Maps now load noticeably faster. We've also made distance calculation more precise. You may see small changes in the distances of trips you've already logged, but that's expected and reflects the improved accuracy. We're also excited to introduce viaduct milestones, now in beta, with a first set of achievements to unlock as you travel. Bulk importing your trips is smoother too, and you can now bring in your travel history from more sources. As always, we'd love to hear what you think.

Vehicle data sync

We have synced our vehicle database with WikiData. If you are missing vehicles, check out this guide or reach out via our ideas board.

Rail Network Update

We have updated the rail network and fixed reported routing issues.

Timetable Data for South Korea

We have expanded our timetable data coverage to South Korea.

Journey sharepic, currencies, railguess

We have improved the positions and sizes of operator logos on the journey sharepic. You can now use the currency KZT. We fixed the 'play again' button on RailGuess (railguess.com) and added an initial version of a game stats page. Further statistics will be added within the next few weeks.

Journey and tag selection

We have improved the input fields for journeys and tags. Relevant options (more recent journeys; tags associated with many trips) are ranked higher.

We have launched RailGuess

Meet RailGuess (beta), our new game at railguess.com! We show you a railway station with its name blurred out, and you pin where you think it is on the map. Play maps for the whole world, Europe or a single country, each at three difficulty levels, and climb the leaderboard for each map. Endless mode is there if you just want to keep guessing. You can try one World game without an account, and your viaduct login works there too, so you don't need to sign up again. Please let us know if you experience any problems or have ideas how to improve RailGuess.

Smarter station search and other improvements

We’ve improved station search with more relevant results and smarter recommendations, added GeoJSON and KML route exports for Patrons alongside GPX, optimized CSV imports for better operator and station matching, fixed several UI glitches, and updated our Privacy Policy and Terms.

More Timetable Data

We expanded our timatable data coverage to Taiwan, India, Mexica, Turkey and Morocco. More countries will follow soon.

Improvements and bug fixes

This summer update brings new track statistics, an expanded Railway Atlas with operators and vehicles, faster date entry without symbols, optional delay reasons, color palettes for journeys, and custom waypoints for circular routes with the same origin and destination.

Bugfix: GPX export

We resolved an issue with the GPX export that affected some journeys. Please try the export again and let us know if you experience any further issues.

Basemap update for sharepics and previews

We have resolved an issue with the basemaps that affected the generation of sharepics and journey previews. We will continue working on improving the map styles.

Elevation profiles and track statistics

You can now view elevation profiles for your trips. The preprocessing is still running for many routes around the world but it will show up within the next few days. We integrated also additional track statistics (e.g., tunnels, bridges). If you have any ideas or notice any issues let us know. We have also removed the maximum trip limit for journeys.

Journey size limit (temporary)

To keep viaduct fast and stable for everyone, we have temporarily introduced a maximum trip limit for journeys (150 trips). The vast majority of journeys are well below this limit, but a small number of very large journeys currently cause significant performance issues that affect the entire application. We are actively working on improvements, and larger journeys are expected to be available again from mid August.
